The Metropolitan Community Clinic at Helliniko conducted 776 patient visits in September 2016.  Psychologists saw 54 patients.  In September we arranged 5 urgently needed imaging tests with labs cooperating with us.

The pharmacy, in addition to distributing medication to our own patients provided support with donations of medicine and medical supplies to:

  • Five public hospitals (two with cancer medication and food supplements)
  • 17 other volunteer community clinics throughout the country (solidarity, self organized dispensaries, municipal dispensaries, etc)
  • Seven patients in detention
  • Two instances of need from refugee services in Attica
  • Three municipal services (helping homes, and municipal services)
  • 35 cases of those assisting refugees (refugee camps, hot spots, international aid organizations, solidarity organizations for refugees, etc)
  • 17 different patients who came to us because of bureaucratic obstacles in obtaining needed medication from hospitals because of the new law (need for psychiatric drugs, etc).
  • Two health centers
  • Two hostels and organizations supporting the homeless
We were visited by:

  • A researcher from the University of Leipzig
  • Photo-reporters from the Netherlands and from Hamburg Germany
  • A German director of documentaries
  • Representative of social services, Municipality of Helliniko
  • A group of activists from the Basque region in Spain
  • A researcher from the European University Institute
  • A representative from the Rosa Luxemburg Institute of Hamburg
  • Reporters from “livemedia”
At the end of September representatives of MCCH (Akis Badoyiannis and Yiannis Marangos) and the Clinic of N. Philidelphia (N. Halkydonas and N. Ionias) participated in Brussels at a meeting of solidarity networks.  The meeting was organized by three members of European Parliament from the left, Nikos Choundis (Greece), Albiol (Spain) and Eleonora Forenza (Italy).  The meeting was held at the Euro Parliament on the 27th of September.  The discussion of positive and productive.  The participants exchanged ideas, and experiences of the solidarity clinics in Greece and the organization of citizens from Spain and Italy.  The Greek delegation described the impact of austerity policies on people’s health; and as a result, the establishment and organization of the solidarity clinics.  The delegations from Italy and Spain discussed experiences in developing citizen backed movements to tackle the austerity policies which have led to mass unemployment.  Particularly in collecting and distribution of food, occupation of empty buildings for needed housing and cultural activities.
The radio program “Solidarity on Air” of the Metropolitan Community Clinic Helliniko which is aired on First Program (ERT) every Saturday from 15:00 – 15:30, throughout Greece on 91.6 and 105.8 FM (aired in Greece, in Greek)
The Metropolitan Community Clinic at Helleniko is a volunteer clinic providing cost-free primary health care to the uninsured, the unemployed who are without resources. We believe that that ALL should have equal and cost free access to the public health system.
