Delivery of Essential Goods to the Victims of the Mandras Flashfloods.

We issued an urgent appeal through Facebook; the response was overwhelming and immediate.  Less than a week later our volunteers were able to fill two vans packed to the top with food, baby formula, clothing, blankets and quilts.

Our volunteer Dr. George Vichas described seeing “in the indescribable destruction and suffering, a couple, cleaning whatever still existed from their shop with calm and positive spirit.  The only moment when the woman had tears was when she spoke of the immeasurable loss of her neighbors who had lost loved ones.  ‘How can I worry about material damage when so many lost their loved ones?  And they are not the only dead and missing.  There were foreigners working in the fields all around, and no one is searching for them.  For all of them I’m crying, and not for our shop that was ruined.’”

Dr. Vichas went on, “I hear their words of kindness and wisdom and I greatly admire them and am grateful for the lesson they have given us.  Even in disaster, great souls find space for hope and optimism.”

Our volunteer Vassiliki Iliopoulou described another touching moment.  “An elderly woman had just come out of hospital was with her daughter at the town hall.  They had nothing, not even their ID’s.  Tomorrow we will send her needed medication by courier.  That’s the least we can do to calm her.  Of course, we gave them blankets and out necessities immediately. What can you say?  There are no words.  But there was the grandmother’s warm smile.”

We thank all the volunteers from our hearts and all those that helped the clinic by donating goods that allowed us to substantially aid the inhabitants of Mandra.  There will be a follow up on the help we can offer.  We will again ask you all to help us amass what is needed.
