December 2017 Newsletter

December 2017

In December 2017 MCCH:

  • Conducted 406 patient visits
  • Our psychologists saw 21 patients.
  • Our dentistry had 12 visits
  • We arranged for two CT scans and two MRIs
  • We distributed baby formula and diapers to 98 families
In December we received donations of medicine and medical supplies from 219 individuals in Greece.  A significant amount of medicine and supplies came from the following sources:

  • One private kindergarten
  • One group of tutoring schools
  • One church
  • One municipality
  • One religious organization
  • Two anonymous individuals

And finally, we received significant donations from groups supporting our clinic from Hamburg Germany, Italy, Luxemburg, Austria and Switzerland as well as individuals from France, Italy and Canada.

With these offerings and the very hard work done by our volunteers who check, organize and insure that each package of medicine that reaches us is in proper order, we can provide medicines to our own patients, and can respond to requests coming in from organizations throughout Greece.

The pharmacy of MCCH was able to not only serve our patients, but to pass medicine on to others.  In December we were able to fulfill requests for medicine and medical supplies to:

  • Six exceptional and urgent cases of individuals who needed to immediately start treatment and did not have the ability for various reasons. (These were not patients of the clinic, but it was determined their need was critical).
  • Two requests from the Social Pharmacy at Vyrona
  • Two requests from the Social Pharmacy at Piraeus
  • One request from the Solidarity Pharmacy of Koridalo
  • One request from the Social Pharmacy, Kilkis
  • One request from Social Services of Asklipiou Hospital, Voula
  • Two requests from Refugee Shelter in Laviro with a significant amount of medication and supplies
  • One request from the Refugee Shelter in Schisto with a significant amount of medication and supplies
  • One request from the nursing home of Piraeus
  • One request from Solidarity Now
  • 29 requests from Praksis

Additionally we took the initiative to distribute medicines, special milk and food supplements to Community Services departments of Public Hospitals.

The volunteers of MCCH work to ensure that, as far as they are able, no resources are lost.

We want those contributing items to our clinic to know that each gift is deeply appreciated and fully utilized and gives relief to those going through difficult times.

In December 2017, we were visited by:

  • Students and parents from the tutoring school which supported us with contribution of infant formula and diapers
  • We had the kindest and most hope-giving visit. Young children from a private kindergarten came to offer formula and diapers for other young ones in need.
MCCH issued one press release on 6/12:

“The Christmas Bazaar of the friends of MCCH”

On 27 December 2017 Dr. George Vichas represented MCCH at an event held at the music club “Sphinx”.  There was a discussion on solidarity together with the lyricist Linas Nikolakopoulou and the journalist Alexander Christakaki.

Christmas Bazaar!!!

With the participation of the hundreds of friends of our clinic, we held the Christmas bazaar organized by Friends of MCCH.

On Sunday 9 December at the cultural center of Helliniko-Argyroupoli municipality young and old flocked to sample home made goodies, choose books, Christmas gift items, liqueurs, marmalades.

Good weather insured the BBQ was a roaring success and a lot of goodies were to be had in the food hall.

For the young ones, face-painting, Isidoros the clown and lots of activities were on show.  Grandma Reginna and friends provided music, acted out stories and led all in Christmas carols.

And finally – the reckoning:

The profit is the practical support offered for the work of MCCH

  • 9/12: “Sexual Harassment of Minors. What should parents know to protect their children.” A discussion with a psychologist volunteering at our clinic on this very serious subject. • 16/12: “The need for vaccination and the danger of epidemics
A discussion on the benefits of vaccination for children, and for the entire community.
  • 23/12: “Six years of MCCH: the lasting response to an on-going crisis”
Providing with primary care and pharmaceutical coverage for the uninsured who were abandoned by the state, MCCH has been one substantial response to the crisis.  At the same time, we have continually called for cost-free access for all to the Greek Public Health System and access to cost-free medication.  We believe there should be  quality health care from a patient-centered  (not merely disease-centered) approach.  During this time of crisis, MCCH has been a self-organized, democratic initiative by individual citizens.

The Metropolitan Community Clinic at Helleniko is a volunteer clinic providing cost-free primary health care to the uninsured, the unemployed who are without resources. We believe that that ALL should have equal and cost free access to the public health system.
